High Efficiency Product Matrix
Why is high efficency power supplies important to promote?
Most power supply's available today run at about 65%-75% power efficency. However technology today can utilize up to 90% of the power it has available to it. With such a discrepancy power tends to be wasted. With the new line of 80 Plus power supplies from Zippy, your typical power efficency sits at 83%. You may think to yourself there isn't much of a difference between 75% and 83% but there really is.

With recent events in some unstable times, businesses, companies, and individuals are doing what they can to “go green.” Green technology today can mean different ideas and products in a wide array of market segments, products, and even product groups. One such group is the realm and adaptation and use of high efficiency power supplies (80plus) in custom system integration solution providers as Anova Microsystems, Inc.
Widespread use of high efficiency power supplies in the workplace can be easily implemented and sought out within new business computer installations, new server, and new or workstation environments. Use of high efficiency power supplies does not also apply only to new machines, but also may be used in retrofitting old and power hungry systems. This adaptation in custom system integration and also mainstream desktop, server, or workstation machines is drawn upon the concept of 80plus. According to the 80 Plus group, 80 plus, or high efficiency power supplies, “is an innovative, electric utility-funded incentive program to integrate more energy-efficient power supplies into desktop computers and serves.” This group’s specification requires all high efficiency power supply manufacturers and custom system integrators to utilize power supplies which have an 80% or greater energy efficiency. These 80plus certified high efficiency power supplies are at least 33% more power efficient than current non-certified power supplies.
In the long run, use of High efficiency power supplies has much energy, in addition to non energy benefits. As an example of energy savings through use of high efficiency power supplies, efficient power supplies can directly save up to 85kWh per desktop PC and can save up to 300kWh per server each year. During peak power demand, high efficiency power supplies with 80 plus qualification can save 16 watts on desktop PCs and can save up to 34 watts on servers during these peak power demand time periods. In server farm installations, use of high efficiency power supplies improves power quality. That is, the required power factor of high efficiency power supplies in the design reduces current draw by roughly 50% when servers are placed on the same branch circuit, thus eliminating the need for expensive power/electrical upgrades.
Use of high efficiency power supply in the workplace can enjoy many benefits of the reduced heat outputs of 80plus certified power supplies. For every 10 degrees Celsius rise in system temperature, semiconductor junction failure rates double. Older less efficient power supplies with excessive heat output are less reliable and thus lower the reliability of the entire computer. Due to the high efficiency power supplies design, businesses can see increased system reliability in that the reduced heat output can reduce failures of system components but also increase reliability of up to 40%. This higher reliability can also save businesses money by reducing the need of costly IT repairs, support and downtime of the system(s) during maintenance. In desktop environments, uses and busnisses can experience a more productive environment in that cooling costs may be reduced since high efficiency power supplies are designed with heat reduction in mind. Also, there would not be the need for additional or extra internal cooling cans that may cause loud noise, vibration, and of course, consume energy, thus creating a more peaceful and quite working environment.
Companies can start saving money, energy, and the environment today by started today by purchasing, recommending or otherwise using high efficiency power supplies in their systems.
